Below the Surface

43x48”, 2024 , mixed media on stretched canvas.

"Below the Surface" is a magnified moment taken from beneath the golden bridge in my painting “Shambhala’s Field of Guardians.” Spiritually, black koi fish symbolize perseverance and strength needed to overcome obstacles. The koi’s journey reflects an essential truth in life: when facing the unknown, especially during challenging or frightening times, faith and tenacity are our most important allies. Surrounding the koi, the underwater scene evokes a mermaid city, further supporting the idea that life—and the landscapes we encounter—is multidimensional. This piece invites reflection on the depth of our experiences, encouraging us to recognize the unseen forces that guide and sustain us beneath the surface of our daily lives.
